Family of Mary Peters and Israel Merritt
Mary PETERS (dau. of Thomas PETERS and Susannah [PALMER]) was born abt 1770 in British Colonial America. She probably died abt 1805 in New Brunswick.

Mary PETERS married Israel MERRITT abt 1790.

Israel MERRITT (possibly the son of Robert MERRITT and Elizabeth ROBINSON) was born abt 1769 probably in British Colonial America. He died 4 April 1826 in St. John, New Brunswick and is probably buried in St. John, New Brunswick. He was an innkeeper.

Mary PETERS and Israel MERRITT had at least the following children:

  1. Hannah MERRITT (abt 1791 - ?)
  2. Ann Peters MERRITT (abt 1800 - bef 1835?)
  3. Robert MERRITT (? - ?)
  4. Peter[s] MERRITT (abt 1794 - abt 1819)
  5. Eleazer MERRITT (? - ?)
  6. Mary MERRITT (abt 1801 - abt 1888)
  7. Israel MERRITT (abt 1803 - abt 1882)

Several researchers have suggested there is another child of Mary PETERS and Israel MERRITT, namely Elizabeth MERRITT (abt 1800 - ?) who married Samuel P. NEVERS 5 February 1817 in St. John, New Brunswick. So far there's no direct evidence of her parentage, but there is significant circumstantial evidence that suggests such a relationship is likely.

Israel MERRITT probably married a second time 8 December 1806 to Isabella Catherine WATSON (abt 1785 - 1832) and had at least two children with her: Catherine R. MERRITT (abt 1807 - ?) and Robert MERRITT (abt 1816 - abt 1822).

The first seven children are mentioned in the will of Mary's father Thomas PETERS. Israel MERRITT died intestate but there are administration papers which name his widow Isabella and his son Israel.

Other people have spent more time researching this family and there is more information available that I have not confirmed yet so I haven't presented it here.
